Yawanawa Tsunu Classic – A Foundational Blend That Traveled Far
More than just a hapé, Yawanawa Tsunu Classic is a piece of history. Among the first blends carried beyond the forest, it found its way into the world through travelers returning from Ayahuasca ceremonies and Yawanawa festivals—often shared in reused soda bottles long before hapé reached online shops.
Back then, few blends were known. Names like Tsunu, Força, and Meditação were spoken with reverence, and this particular blend helped shape that early chapter. Formerly labeled "Yawanawa Grey," we now honor it as Yawanawa Tsunu Classic, recognizing its deep roots and enduring legacy. It remains a bridge between worlds—simple, direct, and steeped in Yawanawa tradition.
This traditional blend combines Tsunu ashes with Moi, a sacred plant central to Yawanawa ceremonial life. The effect is sharp and clearing at first, then settles into a state of grounded alertness. Many describe the onset as intense but the afterglow as smooth, calming, and energizing. Deep breaths follow and eyes may water as the medicine moves through cleanly, leaving behind clarity and presence.
“Tsunu” is a widely used term in Amazonian hapé preparations. Among the Yawanawa, it typically refers to Pau Pereira (Platycyamus regnellii), though other tribes may use the name for different trees. What unites these ashes is not a fixed species, but a lineage of purpose.
Pau Pereira’s thick bark holds strong spiritual properties. Its ashes are known to cleanse, protect, and stabilize the energetic field—often used to prepare for deep spiritual work or release emotional weight. In this blend, Tsunu provides the structure and clarity, while Moi anchors the experience in grounded stillness.
We also offer a second Yawanawa Tsunu blend from a different source, with subtle differences in texture and energetic expression. But Tsunu Classic is the one that started it all—valued for its historical significance, smooth finish, and luminous clarity.

Blend Profile: With most authentic Yawanawá hapé the recipe is predictable: it is the classic, and as some of the older members of the tribe say, the only recipe that truly deserves the name Yawanawá; Rustica and Tsunu ashes. Naturally the younger generation is more flexible in their recipes.
Where many of the Yawanawá hapé's are made with a lot of ash and such are normally a more light grey tone this one is more yellowish, having less ash then what you see a lot, but is also not too much on the rustica, a very well based hapé, with nice earthy tones in the appearance and in the effect. It is not as sharp on the sinuses and the initial hit is not as abrupt or painful as some. It imparts a gentle warming with the rustica coming through with an almost peppery sensation. It is a very calming, meditative and pleasantly persistent in effect.
As the recipe is often similar, what makes the character of the different Yawanawá hapé's or 'Rumã' as they call it in their language, is the energy of the one who makes it. His intention, his focus, his state of mind, the whole energy of the person is in the finished hapé. That’s why it is important that the maker is dedicated to the spirituality of his people and he never looses sight that he is making hapé for others to heal themselves or connect to their spirituality.
Shaneihu Yawanawá lives in the village Yawarani in the tribal lands on the Gregorio River in Acre, Brazil, the Yawanawá territory. His stepfather named the village and was, after his grandfather, one of the last two medicine men from the old days. Yawa and Tata who both passed away in the last few years, Yawa living until a respectable 105 years of age. Shaneihu did his "Muka" diet with Yawa, probably being the last person that did this one year initiation diet with the old man. The last batch of his hapé, or Rumã, (Yawanawá Shaneihu Dieta) was made during the diet and like that got its name. His diet ended already some time ago and so this new batch is not made during the diet but still is made with the correct prayers, intention and knowledge of someone initiated the proper way.
Shaneihu is mostly known for his musical qualities, he has a beautiful CD called Kanaro. All songs are in the Yawanawá Pano language. A man of many talents.
