Once seminomadic, they have faced centuries of displacement and assimilation, yet continue to uphold a strong cultural identity through language, ritual, and deep connection to nature.

Cultural and Spiritual Traditions

The Pataxó speak Patxohã, a revitalized language of the Macro-Jê family, now taught in schools and community programs. Their most celebrated ritual, the Toré, is a spiritual dance invoking natural forces through song, drumming, and sacred herbs. Ceremonial practices include body painting, feathered adornments, and offerings of Tabaco and healing roots.

Stewards of the Atlantic Forest

Living in protected areas like Monte Pascoal and Barra Velha, the Pataxó face ongoing threats from deforestation and land invasion. In response, they’ve embraced agroforestry, eco-tourism, and environmental education—blending cultural preservation with ecological action.
